Umami
About This Spot
Stepping into Umami feels like finding a quiet gem tucked away in Fayetteville’s rhythm—a snug retreat where the hum of conversation blends effortlessly with the subtle clatter of chopsticks and the occasional soft pour of tea. The pace here isn’t rushed; it invites diners to settle in and savor each moment, whether you’re escaping the midday bustle or coming together for a relaxed evening meal. The warm lighting and thoughtful decor hint at the care poured into every detail, creating a welcoming little nook that locals have come to treasure.
At Umami, food and atmosphere move hand in hand. The vibrant colors of freshly sliced sashimi meet the comforting steam rising from a bowl of ramen crafted with a lovingly prepared broth. With every bite, you can sense the melding of tradition and warmth—from the tender chicken katsu nestled beside rich curry-infused pasta to playful twists on classic sushi rolls that bring smiles to kids and adults alike. There’s a quiet joy in sharing sticky-sweet honeydew milk tea or indulging in tempura cheesecake that rounds off the meal with a hint of whimsy.
This is a place where attentiveness feels genuine, where servers seem to anticipate your needs without rushing the experience. The lively bustle on busy nights feels less like a crowd and more like a shared appreciation of honest, thoughtfully prepared Japanese flavors. Families, friends, and solo diners alike find themselves equally at ease here, discovering small moments of connection over warm bowls, delicate greens, or chilled sips.
Whether you’re waving goodbye with a small glow-in-the-dark trinket or quietly savoring miso soup that appeals beyond tradition, Umami’s charm lies in its balance of familiar comforts and curated surprises. It’s a spot that feels discovered rather than advertised—a local haven that welcomes you back, time and again, to experience that quietly satisfying sense of belonging.

Today I came in HUNGRYYYY and needing everything on the menu but i was super indecisive - and my server was Ariana, when I tell you she went above and beyond and filled all my requests!!! did yall know you can do just the broth for $3? Super good deal they gave me a huge portion and she was so attentive and sweet! Going again just off the service alone plus the food is super yummy

We are married to one spot in Fayetteville and it was closed today so we decided to try this place and honestly everything was great. Food was delicious, service was amazing! We will definitely return. We were missing out by not giving this place a chance sooner. The kids also say thank you for the keychains and rings with lights

Best place for late lunch & dinner in the area. This place has no competition. We ordered sushi, rolls, ramen, seafood fries, mixed sashimi salad, matcha & strawberry ice cream for dessert and everything was sooo nice. Their side & dessert is a must! I have very high standards when it comes to ramen, and Umami’s ramen was so decent. They make their own soup base and the chashu was as great as the ones I had in Japan. All the rolls had dynamic flavors. Fried Oysters just melted in my mouth. The open kitchen seemed very clean, and the servers were so kind. Loved the anime figures and drawings, too! 10 out of 10 defo recommend!!

Food was delicious. Nice, attentive service. Cute decor throughout. Snug little place! Glad to have found a place that serves katsu curry nearby so had to try that, along with the volcano roll. Fish was nice and fresh... Nice to see they had a legit sushi chef making the rolls. Yum!

There were three in our dining party. In terms of overall stars, our ratings were 3, 3.5 and 4. The vegan in the party was concerned there would be no appropriate dishes, but much to his surprise, really enjoyed the miso soup, edamame and the amazing tofu salad. The other two felt their food was ok (beef curry and tempura). The place was packed so they are doing something right. There were still people coming in 15 minutes before closing. Our table was close to the bathroom and we could occasionally smell it. Other than that, the atmosphere was ok. Service was good but it would be nice if our server introduced herself. Bottom line question is would we go back…one vote for yes, two for no.

Arie - the hostess - was extremely welcoming! Sat us very quick and helped make us comfortable by handing us to our server (J - the sweet woman with the red/pink hair.) This was the first time I’ve been out to a restaurant with my bad anxiety and they both made me feel normal and comfortable. I will be back for sure The food was amazing. Atmosphere is what I needed. Thank yall so much!

I went in with my 2 kids and the staff was amazing. They were very welcoming. The food was amazing and reasonably priced. My kids split the chicken teriyaki, I had Tokyo Style Tonkotsu Ramen and my husband had the Pork Katsu Curry. We also had some desert. We will definitely be back! I can't wait to bring my other daughter back with me as well!
